Sia dismisses backlash to her film’s portrayal of autism

Australian pop singer-songwriter Sia is known for hits such as “Chandelier” but also for protecting her privacy, often concealing her identity with larger-than-life wigs.

It might come as a surprise, then, that the nine-time Grammy nominee engaged directly with critics of the new trailer for her upcoming film, “Music.”

The project, which she’s calling a “cinematic experience,” will feature dancer and frequent collaborator Maddie Ziegler as Music, a teen with autism as well as actors Kate Hudson and Leslie Odom Jr.

The “Elastic Heart” artist, who has dabbled in directing since 2014, released the trailer Thursday. Since then, a backlash has been brewing on Twitter around the portrayal of Ziegler’s character, who communicates her emotions through a tablet in the trailer, leaning into a disability the actress does not have.

Sia, however, seems annoyed by the pushback, tweeting: “Why don’t you watch my film before you judge it? FURY.”

“There’s something about that bullseye of midnight that makes almost an imperative that you check in with yourself,” King continues. “You’re supposed to be in love at midnight. You’re supposed to be in a couple. Which is why it’s so great for Sex and the City, because anytime we could underline what society says vs. the reality of where people are was always powerful.”

After six seasons of memorable New York nights, Sex and the City got its first New Year’s Eve moment in the 2008 movie — but all our heroines are staying in. Having been jilted by

How I’ve Grieved My Mother’s Death During the Pandemic

This year on my mother’s birthday, in October, I woke up from one of many dreams I’ve had about her since her death. I’d been sitting with family and friends in my grandmother’s backyard, our lawn chairs scattered across a carpet of sun-dappled grass. We were all talking, sharing memories of my mom. I don’t remember the specific stories, but I know there was joy, more laughter than tears—even though, in my dream, my mom was also gone.

Like so many grieving families in 2020, we haven’t been able to gather or mourn together. My mother died of cancer in May, and my husband, kids and I had to watch the small funeral service via livestream from across the country. Until the day before, I wasn’t sure we would be able to do even that—two months into the pandemic, the funeral-home representative told me they had never set up
