‘Waikiki’ and ‘Hawaiian Soul’ Win Made in Hawai’i Awards

“Waikiki” and “Hawaiian Soul” won the Made in Hawai’i awards at the the 40th edition of the Hawai’i International Film Festival.

The awards were announced at a virtual gala held Sunday. “Waikiki” is described as a dramatic and visceral allegory for the contemporary issues that plague Hawaii’s people, including mental illness, physical abuse and the loss of Hawaiian identity.

“In his feature debut, director Christopher Kahunahana unravels a hauntingly beautiful film that depicts the complicated and intertwined sides of paradise, both darkness and light,” the festival jury said of “Waikiki.” “Against the backdrop of Hawaii’s natural beauty, Kahunahana and cast focus on the very real struggles of many Hawaiian residents – and leave us wondering how we can be a part of the solution, not just the problem.”

The jury gave a special award for cinematography to Ryan Miyamoto for his work on “Waikiki” and said, “A visually complex film

Iran plans ‘calculated’ response after nuclear scientist killed as newspaper calls for revenge on Israeli city

Iran is plotting a “calculated and decisive” response to the assassination of its top nuclear scientist, according to an adviser to the country’s supreme leader, as calls for a retaliatory attack escalate.

An opinion piece published in a hard-line newspaper suggested that Iran attack the port city of Haifa, causing “heavy human casualities,” if Israel carried out the killing.

“Undoubtedly, Iran will give a calculated and decisive answer to the criminals who took Martyr Mohsen Fakhrizadeh from the Iranian nation,” Kamal Kharrazi, the adviser who also leads Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, said in a statement, according to Reuters.

Fakhrizadeh, who founded the Islamic Republic’s military nuclear program in the early 2000s, was killed in a military-style ambush Friday in the outskirts of Tehran when a truck bomb exploded and gunmen opened fire.

North Korea puts further restrictions on seawater entry to fight pandemic: state media

According to the The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea is taking steps to “completely remove uncivilized and unhygienic elements that could help make room for the spread of an epidemic,” during the winter.

Despite these measures, North Korea maintains that no coronavirus cases have been reported in its territory, a claim many experts question. The country has closed its borders, flown out diplomats and isolated residents displaying symptoms, the Associated Press reports.
