American Music Awards Sink to Record Low Ratings

ABC awards show’s viewership was nearly twice as high last year

The 2020 American Music Awards (AMAs), hosted by Taraji P. Henson, were the latest victims of the coronavirus pandemic — and of TV ratings trends in general.

Sunday’s AMAs on ABC sunk to record-low ratings and nearly halved last year’s overall television audience. The annual awards show’s previous low in the key demo came last year. In terms of total viewers, the prior AMAs low was 2018.

TV Ratings: American Music Awards Fall 50% to New Record Lows

The 2020 American Music Awards delivered a big decline in rating and total viewership from last year, falling to record lows in both measurements.

Last night’s awards show, which was hosted by “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson and saw Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Dan + Shay emerge as the big winners, averaged a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49 and around 3.8 million total viewers. That represents a 50% rating decline and a 43% loss in total viewership. For comparison, last years AMAs were down only 4% on the year prior in the ratings column, and in fact gained around 200,000 viewers from 2018. Its “America’s Funniest Home Videos” lead-in scored a 0.5 rating and just under 4 million viewers.

Of course it needs to be mentioned that those historically small AMA numbers aren’t really particularly surprising given that awards shows are tumbling almost across the board of late. For

American Music Awards 2020 recap: Taylor Swift, the Weeknd and Dan + Shay win big

One of the biggest nights in music, the American Music Awards, kicked off Sunday night with a series of worldwide premieres, big wins and even bigger surprises.

Hosted by Taraji P. Henson from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, the audience looked a little different this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Along with a “small but mighty COVID-free audience,” cardboard cutouts of the who’s who within the music industry, like Dolly Parton and Beyoncé, lined the front rows — of which Henson enjoyed pretending to interact with as if they were the real deal.

Swift further cemented herself as the most decorated winner in American Music Award history, bumping her lifetime awards total to 32 on Sunday. The awards she added to her

Bieber was named favorite male pop/rock artist and picked up his two other wins for his collaboration with country singers Dan + Shay on “10,000 Hours”. The Weeknd took home trophies for best soul/R&B male artist as well as for his album “After Hours” and song “Heartless.”

Taylor Swift Wins Three American Music Awards, Says She’s MIA Because of ‘Recording All of My Old Music’

Click here to read the full article.

Taylor Swift won three American Music Awards Sunday night, including the top artist of the year honor — explaining her absence as due to being busy in the studio re-recording her entire Big Machine catalog.

The climactic favorite artist award came as something as a surprise, since Swift’s name had not come up as a winner any time earlier in the three hours, leading to an underlying assumption that she might have been shut out in some or all of the four categories she’d been nominated in. But host Taraji P. Henson said after Swift’s filmed acceptance that she had also won favorite pop/rock female and favorite music video (for “Cardigan”), awards that were presumably left off-camera because Swift had only submitted one speech, or to heighten the final element of surprise.

“The reason I can’t be with you tonight is because I’m
