Elvis Costello on Turning ‘Armed Forces’ Into 2020’s Coolest Boxed Set

Very few music boxed sets aspire beyond being gussied up digital repositories to becoming actual physical pieces of pop art. But opening up the new vinyl set from Elvis Costello, “The Complete Armed Forces,” feels like getting several Christmas mornings all at once, with a suitable-for-fondling nine records, seven paperbacks and various other ephemera intended to bring back the color explosions of 1979 as well as invoke other visual styles from the pulp-fiction ‘50s to the present. At the center of the “super-deluxe” set, enveloped in elaborate, Barney Bubbles-designed origami packaging, is one of rock ‘n’ roll’s fairly undisputed masterpieces, “Armed Forces,” a semi-concept record that reinvented Costello’s style three albums into his career and made “emotional fascism” sound like great, brow-furrowed fun.

Elvis Costello has returned with Hey Clockface, his 31st (!) studio full-length album to date. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.

Hey Clockface follows his 2018 effort Look Now. It spans 14 tracks in total, including the previously released singles “We Are All Cowards Now”, “No Flag”, and “Hetty O’Hara Confidential”. It also features “Hey Clockface / How Can You Face Me”, which he performed live on Colbert last night.

Costello literally traveled the world to create Hey Clockface, recording music in Helsinki, Paris, and New York City — all three of which play integral roles in the album’s story. Elvis Costello Crafts a Chilling Saga on New Song ‘Newspaper Pane’

Elvis Costello has shared a gripping new song, “Newspaper Pane,” from his upcoming album, Hey Clockface, out October 30th via Concord Records.

Unlike other songs on Hey Clockface — which were recorded in Helsinki and Paris — “Newspaper Pane” came about after the Covid-19 pandemic set in and Costello found himself separated from his collaborators. The song was written and produced in New York by composer/arranger Michael Leonhart, with the help of guitarist Bill Frisell, while Costello contributed his lyrics and vocals from a “westward hideout,” according to a release.

The song begins with a brooding aura as Costello paints a portrait of a woman holed up in a room where she’s covered the windows with old newspapers, which both keep out the elements and allow her to immerse herself in the details of an unattainable life.
