Three Classic Eddie Van Halen Guitars Sold For $422,000

Three classic guitars designed and played by Eddie Van Halen sold for $422,000 at a Julien’s Auction earlier this week. The sale, which included items from stars including Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Lady Gaga, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson and Elvis, was highlighted by a trio of the late guitar hero’s customized instruments, including one of his Kramer “Frankenstrat” models with the signature white and black stripes on a red body, which went for $231,250.

His 2004 EVH Charvel Art Series ax went for $140,800 and the guitar and costume that EVH used in the “Hot For Teacher” video brought in $50,000. The items went under the hammer as part of Tuesday and Wednesday’s “Icons & Idols Trilogy: Rock ‘N’ Roll” event, which went online just over a month after Van Halen died (on Oct. 6) at age 65 following a long battle with cancer.

Eddie Van Halen, Pop Smoke, Naya Rivera, Little Richard & More Appear in 2020 ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ Cover Tribute

British artist Chris Barker’s annual Beatles-style tribute to lost celebs includes some of 2020’s biggest losses, including Little Richard, George Floyd, Bill Withers, Pop Smoke, soccer legend Diego Maradona, Chadwick Boseman and Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen. Barker — who has been meticulously crafting his homage to the infamous cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Bandsince 2016 as a tribute to dearly departed pop culture icons and newsmakers — said his initial idea was to start with a blank slate in January and just add faces as the year went on.

That approach would have simply meant swapping out some images for more prominent ones as the year went on for a more “interactive” art project (see the final image below). But as this annus horribilis just kept getting more and more horribilis, he was glad he didn’t switch up his style. “Early

Mammoth WVH’s Eddie Van Halen Tribute ‘Distance’ Debuts Atop Rock Charts: ‘I Just Wish He Was Here to See It’

“Distance” also bows at No. 9 on the likewise multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs tally and opens at Nos. 1 and 2 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales and Rock Digital Song Sales rankings, respectively.

“I am beyond humbled by the response to ‘Distance,'” Wolfgang, who also wrote the song, tells Billboard. “I can’t believe that it’s appearing on all of these charts so soon after release. The fact that so many have embraced the song and video shows how much we have in common in the love and respect we have for my father. I just wish he was here to see it. Thank you so much to everyone who’s listening and also to my whole team who has worked so hard to make this a reality.”

While the song’s music video, which features home movies and video footage of the father and son together, drove

In an interview with Howard Stern, his first since the death of his father last month, Wolfgang Van Halen spoke about their life together and debuted a new tribute song, “Distance,” which brought Stern’s co-host Robin Quivers to tears.

Van Halen, known as “Wolfie,” cleared up rumors he was taking his father’s place as the band’s guitarist.

“You can’t have Van Halen without Eddie Van Halen. I’m not my dad. I’m not going to replace him,” he said. “I’ve spent my life making sure I’m not like him and I’m my own person.”

He added that outside of a possible tribute show in the future and archival releases farther down the line, Van Halen is done.

Wolf Van Halen speaks out on loss of his father Eddie Van Halen

Music fans around the world grieved last month when rock legend Eddie Van Halen died of cancer at age 65.

Now his son, Wolf Van Halen, is opening up to TODAY’s Carson Daly about his personal grief since losing his dad. “It’s really tough. Some days are better than others,” Wolf told Carson in a segment airing Tuesday.

The 29-year-old musician, who began playing bass in his father’s band, Van Halen, more than a decade ago, is Eddie’s only child. His mother, former “One Day at a Time” star Valerie Bertinelli, was married to the rocker from 1981 until 2007. (Eddie married his second wife, Janie Liszewski, in 2009.)

“It doesn’t seem like the pain is ever really gonna go away. You just kinda figure out how to carry it a bit better,” said Wolf, who called Eddie “the best father I could ever ask for” on Instagram shortly after

Ozzy Osbourne Says Eddie Van Halen Asked Him to Sing in Band

Photo-Illustration: Vulture and Shutterstock

There was a point in the mid-1980s, after David Lee Roth left Van Halen, when Eddie Van Halen was going through his Rolodex, asking people to join one of the world’s biggest rock bands. He asked Patty Smyth, she explained to Stereogum earlier this year. He asked Journey’s Steve Perry too, he said in a Rolling Stone tribute. He eventually, of course, tapped Sammy Hagar. (We’re sure he never asked David Crosby.) And, Ozzy Osbourne revealed on his radio show, Eddie once asked him to join too, after Hagar’s stint in the band. Speaking on his SiriusXM radio show “Ozzy Speaks,” the former Black Sabbath singer remembered a phone call from the guitar legend, who died earlier this month. “He phoned me up one time and asked me if I wanted to sing in his band,” Osbourne said. “Way after Sammy. I think he was a

Steve Perry Describes the Time Eddie Van Halen Called With An Offer He Couldn’t Refuse

“Then you had David Lee Roth who was a real showman and a real fun guy to be entertained by,” he added. ” And you had Michael Anthony on bass who had this real high, literally operatic tenor voice. Eddie sang beautifully too. They were loaded with what they needed to come out there and do what they did.” Truth be told, Perry said he didn’t spend much time on the tour with Eddie because the band had a kind of “punk ‘f–k you’ thing” going on and the guitarist didn’t really want to spend time with Steve.

No matter, because when Roth split with VH in 1985, Perry said he was living in the Bay Area unsure what he was going to do. “I don’t remember how it went down, but either I called Eddie or Eddie called me,” he said. “Back in those days, we were both having
